The Nantou Distillery made the decision to alter the perception that Taiwan isn't typically associated with whisky. Although the state owns numerous distilleries, only this one makes whisky. While it is illegal in some states, alcohol is produced in Taiwan. Furthermore, Nantou has been producing it for the past ten years; thus, its Single Malt was long overdue.

Next to Kavalan, Omar is one of the two most popular spirits in Taiwan, and it is produced in one of the four Scottish pot stills. This specific bottle was aged in a Sherry barrel, which is how Nantou ages its whiskies. Only between October and April, when temperatures are more relaxed, do they create whisky using malted barley imported from Scotland.

While whiskies typically don't originate in Taiwan, those that do are quite exceptional. There is no exception with Omar Sherry Cask Single Malt. One can tell they are knowledgeable since it is elegant. Mandarin and orange, which also predominate on the palate, along with honey, vanilla, and dark chocolate, are a nice counterpoint to the sherry cask flavors.

This is lacking in structure and taste. The syrupy-textured palate features flavors of raspberry syrup, pomegranate, and gummy cherries, followed by mellow spices and jumbled savory notes. The meaty scent has prune juice, star anise, lamb tagine, and predominately sour undertones.
